Orbell Cafe

PLEASE NOTE - DURING THE CURRENT CORONA VIRUS SITUATION, THIS FACILITY IS NOT AVAILABLE. IT IS HOPED TO BE ABLE TO RESUME ONCE THE PANDEMIC IS OVER. A virtual cafe Zoom meeting is held every Wednesday morning and is very popular. Contact Steve Carpenter on 01858525120 for login details.

The cafe was the idea of Linda Lake who in early 2016 suggested opening a cafe in the Orbell room on Wednesday mornings to provide an alternative meeting place and source of refreshment other than the pub. The original intention was to open early at 9.30 so that the mums and dads could drop in after dropping off the children. It has never worked out like that and instead has become a real community hub with over 40 people, church-goers and non-church goers alike drifting in to enjoy the excellent filter coffee and toasted teacakes on offer. It has become an established routine for many who stay for some time and increasingly is being used by village organisations as a place for an informal meeting. The Orbell room has been completely refurbished thanks to generous support from Jean Wilford, Valerie Carpenter, Trevor Lake and the Doughtys amongst others and is now a very pleasant and comfortable meeting place. In the Summer we placed tables and chairs outside in the Churchyard and this went down well. An interesting feature of the Wednesday cafe is that there are usually as men as women there. Often there is local produce and other items which are available for donations to Church funds. This includes local eggs and honey

Although the intention was never to make money and the prices are kept low so that nobody is excluded, the venture has been so successful that the organisers - Linda and Valerie have been able to hand over nearly £3000 from the cafe takings to the Church. The cafe is open every Wednesday between 9.00 and Noon and all are welcome.
